American Place Theatre’s Stage Presentation of The Things They Carried

Place:
Strings Music Pavilion - 900 Strings Rd.

In honor of ONE BOOK STEAMBOAT's community reading of The Things They Carried, Tim O'Brien's' unparalleled Vietnam testament and  classic work of American literature...

Strings Music Festival presents
The American Place Theatre’s Literature to Life® Stage Presentation of
The Things They Carried
By Tim O'Brien
Performed by Billy Lyons
Directed by Wynn Handman
Bass accompaniment by Mark Diamond

The live performance of The Things They Carried is a Literature to Life original. It was adapted for the stage in 2004 with 60 minutes of verbatim performance from Tim O'Brien's unique and important piece of American literature that fictionalizes his experiences surrounding the Vietnam War. He presents a blurred line between truth and reality, fact and fiction, that makes his journey unforgettable. Developed and premiered at Playhouse Square in Cleveland in collaboration with Mr. O’Brien, the actor leads us through five of the short stories from the book including "The Rainy River" and "The Man I Killed."  With original music as underscoring, the audience lays witness to the complex issues of war and the universal struggle of the soldier.  Surrounded by pre and post show interactive discussions the audience will explore themes including ethics, making choices and violence.

GET TICKETS to see American Place Theatre's stage presentation of The Things They Carried at Strings Music Pavilion.
This is the perfect follow-up to Bud Werner Memorial Library's  Literature to Life® Community Workshop. General admission tickets cost $18 ( $10 for students) and are available online here or at the library's front desk after Oct. 1 (cash or check only).

About American Place Theatre & Literature to Life
The American Place Theatre is committed to producing high quality new work by diverse American writers and to pursuing pluralism and diversity in all its endeavors. We strive to respond to the needs of our time with work that is relevant and cuts deeply into the fabric of American society. LITERATURE TO LIFE, The American Place Theatre’s performance-based literacy program, presents professionally staged verbatim adaptations of significant American literary works. This educational program gives students a new form of access to literature by bringing to life the world of books with performances that create an atmosphere of discovery and spark the imagination. Literature to Life has already provided a catalyst for learning and self-expression for over 400,000 students nation-wide. The Theatre, having received over 30 Obies and 16 Audelcos, is critically acclaimed as a birthing place for artistic endeavors at the crossroad of literature and live performance for now 48 years.

This project received support from CCI, Colorado Creative Industries; WESTAF, the Western States Arts Federation; and the National Endowment for the Arts.
