How to read those seductive seed catalogs for what will work in the High Country.

2015 seed catalogs are arriving in your mailbox already. How will you choose what to grow in your garden next summer? Learn what you need to know about shopping for seeds that will grow successfully in the Steamboat Springs area. Seed expert and CSU Master Gardener Jackie Buratovich leads an evening of seed catalog perusal and great advice. Bring your own stories of seed success or failures, and any catalogs you've already received -- and we'll have more catalogs on hand for you to explore too.

This program is presented by Bud Werner Memorial Library on behalf of the Bud Werner Seed Library, and Routt County's CSU Extension and the local CSU Master Gardeners.

Jackie Buratovich

About the speaker
Jackie Buratovich may be genetically predisposed to horticulture. Growing up on a family table grape ranch where home grown vegetables and creatively grafted fruit trees were  the norm, Jackie acknowledges that wherever she lives, she must grow things. While getting an engineering degree at Cal Poly, there were portable pots of greens and herbs; at 7,000 feet in Truckee, California she and four attack cats defended cherry tomatoes from the deer; in the past 13 years her old town Louisville, Colorado cottage steadily sprouted six raised beds, an apple, a plum and bed of raspberries (all of which she’s hoping the tenants will love too!). Jackie recently moved to Routt County and currently farms a small greenhouse in Oak Creek. A CSU Colorado Master Gardener since 2003 (including a three-year hiatus whilst building water systems and gardening in Afghanistan), Jackie is committed to helping folks find their inner farmer and to supporting preservation of our heritage and native seeds.

More than books...Bud Werner Memorial Library is home to the Bud Werner Seed Library.
Library card holders will once again have free access to hundreds of varieties of vegetable and flower seeds in 2015. In the spring, community members can check out seeds just like they check books, music and DVDs.
