Picture Book Picks - January, 2012

Posted: 01/10/2012 - 12:12pm

My New Year's Resolution for 2012 is to read over a hundred books this year. I've decided to include picture books because not only are they of high literary quality, they have pretty pictures and are usually quite thin. Here are some brand new picture books that I think are worthy of 5 stars.

A Nation's Hope: the Story of Boxing Legend Joe Louis

Written by Matt de la Pena and Illustrated by Kadir Nelson

Beautiful illustrations add depth to this poetic biography. An important story to share with kids.

E-mergency!

Written by Tom Lichtenfeld

The letter E has fallen and injured herself-- which letters will replace her and how will words be spelled without her? There is a very funny jokeor word pun on every page and deserves some extra time to read all of the comedic gems hidden in this book.

"This book is hystorical and should bo vory hard to road in front of childron for storytimo. I'm oxcitod to try it!"

Stuck

Written by Oliver Jeffers

Oh how I love Oliver Jeffers, author and illustrator of other fabulous picture books such as, The Incredible Book Eating Boy and How to Catch a Star. Stuck is the story of a young boy named Floyd, who gets his kite stuck in a tree and attempts to knock it down with increasingly larger and larger objects. This book is laugh out loud funny and sure to be a great read aloud before bed.

The Cat and the Fiddle: A Treasury of Nursery Rhymes

Compiled and Illustrated by Jackie Morris

This book is just as the title satates, a treasury of traditional and obscure nursery rhymes. What merits my 5 star rating is the absolutely stunning water color illustrations by Jackie Morris. Morris is the illustrator of The Snow Leopard and The Ice Bear as well as many religious themed folktales and stories. The Cat and the Fiddle would make an excellent gift for a young reader.

Mustache

Written by Mac Barnett and Illustrated by Kevin Cornell

King Duncan is a handsome king, but also very vain. He lets his kingdom fall to ruins as he struts about oggling himself in the Royal Mirror. When his subjects ask for better roads and playgrounds, he gives them something better, more pictures and statues of himself. This book is very fun to read aloud and the kids enjoy the silliness that erupts when all of the pictures in the kingdom of Duncan are defaced with mustaches. Barnett is also the author of one of my all-time favorite picture books, Billy Twitters and his Blue Whale Problem.
