  • Library Hall
A pair of veteran Cuba travelers shares an armchair adventure, and their expertise for travelers longing to go there
After being shut down for almost two years due to COVID-19, Cuba is back open and welcoming American tourists. Steamboat resident Jim Michler has lived in Cuba part of the year since 2016, and along with and his partner Sharon Silva, they will share some of their favorite photos of Cuba and answer questions about visiting a land frozen in time. Among the things they'll discuss are how to get a Cuban visa, getting to Cuba, places to visit on the island, safety, COVID-19 in Cuba, currency and money needed, translators, cigars, music and dance.

About the speakers

Jim Michler is a former software executive who retired six years ago, however he actually lived in Steamboat in 1972-'73, when he failed as a ski bum and went back to college. Although Jim has lived in six countries, he has had a love for Cuba since he was a child. He snuck into Cuba originally on a bike tour during President Obama's visit and has lived in Cuba part of the year ever since.

Sharon Silva retired eight years ago from the telecommunications industry, where she worked in the business intelligence and auditing disciplines. She is a Colorado native who visited Cuba for the first time via a structured tour and now enjoys biking and hiking with the freedom to be on her own.
