Maasai

An evening with the Maasai People of Kenya

Tuesday, April 4, 2023 - 6:30pm to 7:30pm
  • Library Hall
Maasai Chief Joseph ole Tipanko, his wife Cicilia and John Parsitau visit the Yampa Valley to share the culture of the Maasai People of Kenya

Maasai Chief Joseph, Cici and John live outside of Nairobi in the Ngong Hills. They are trying to maintain their culture heritage which dates back centuries, while being pressed upon by modern society. At the library, they will talk about the difficulties that this causes and also how they are facing threats to their very existence by the years long drought that is wiping out their cattle herds, their main livelihood. They will demonstrate their tremendous singing and dancing skills and will have jewelry and art items for sale to help raise funds for water projects and education for their people.

This free cultural event at the Library is presented with Maasai Development Incorporated, a Colorado-based nonprofit foundation organized to help Maasai people of Kenya and Tanzania who are striving to maintain a pastoral lifestyle while integrating sustainable development.
