Optics 101: Choosing the right binocular

Friday, August 30, 2019 - 11:00am to 12:00pm
  • Library Hall
An introduction to selecting your essential birding optics -- a talk for the 2019 Yampa Valley Crane Festival!

Chip Clouse, manager of The Front Range Birding Company, teaches about how to choose the right binocular for you. Have you ever wondered what 8x42 or 10x50 actually mean? Or what makes some binoculars brighter or more expensive than others? Are you confounded by terms like “Field of View,” “Close-focus,” “IPD,” “Exit Pupil,” etc.? Chip will answer all your questions in this informative talk. Afterward, you can visit The Front Range Birding Company's exhibit in the Library Conference Room to try out an extensive selection of binoculars and spotting scopes from Opticron, Swarovski, Leica, Zeiss and Kowa. Proceeds from any optics sales benefit Colorado Crane Conservation Coalition and the Yampa Valley Crane Festival.

About the Yampa Valley Crane Festival

The Greater Sandhill Crane is an iconic species of the Yampa Valley. Returning in the spring, cranes nest and raise their young in wetland areas throughout the valley. In late summer and early fall, hundreds of cranes from the Rocky Mountain flock join the local birds to rest and feed before continuing their journey south. The festival includes daily crane viewings, expert speakers, films, art exhibits, workshops, family activities and more. All community activities and events are free unless otherwise indicated in the program, and Bud Werner Memorial Library is festival headquarters and the venue for many of these talks, films and events.
