Women and LGBTQ+ journalists launch startup The 19th* to buck a broken news media system. A film & conversation.

The  2023/'24 Indie Lens season of films and community conversations continues with a documentary by Heather Courtney (director/producer), Princess A. Hairston (director/producer), Chelsea Hernandez (director/producer), and Diane M. Quon (producer)

Who decides which stories get told? A scrappy group of women and LGBTQ+ journalists buck the white male-dominated status quo, banding together to launch The 19th*, a digital news startup aiming to combat misinformation. A story of an America in flux, and the voices often left out of the narrative, the documentary Breaking the News shows change doesn’t come easy.

This film and conversation is a co-presentation by Bud Werner Library and Queer Futures, the Yampa Valley's new LGBTQIA2S+ resource center.

After the film, Chelsie Holmes with Queer Futures will host a discussion with reporter Alison Berg surrounding the film and how its themes play out in our Yampa Valley community. Everyone is invited and encouraged to participate.

Alison Berg

Alison Berg is a reporter with Rocky Mountain PBS. Alison covers the entire state but is based in Denver. Prior to their job at RMPBS, Alison covered Steamboat and Oak Creek municipal governments, housing, and the ski industry for The Steamboat Pilot. They're thrilled to be back in the Yampa Valley any chance they get.

Breaking the News will premiere on PBS on February 19, 2024.
