Cranes of the World

Sunday, September 3, 2023 - 11:15am to 12:15pm
  • Library Hall
A Yampa Valley Crane Festival talk with naturalist Sandra Noll

Abundant in visual imagery and storytelling, the program opens with an overview of the natural history, cultural symbolism and mythology of cranes, followed by a brief introduction to the International Crane Foundation and its role in crane conservation. Unique characteristics of each of the world’s 15 crane species will be highlighted, beginning in Africa and ending with the two species found only in North America: the abundant Sandhill Crane and highly endangered Whooping Crane. This program was inspired by the organizational integrity and important work of the International Crane Foundation.

About the Yampa Valley Crane Festival: Aug. 31- Sept. 3, 2023

The Greater Sandhill Crane is an iconic species of the Yampa Valley. Returning in the spring, cranes nest and raise their young in wetland areas throughout the valley. In late summer and early fall, hundreds of cranes from the Rocky Mountain flock join the local birds to rest and feed before continuing their journey south. The Yampa Valley Crane Festival celebrates these iconic birds with daily crane viewings, expert speakers, films, art exhibits, workshops, family activities and more. Bud Werner Memorial Library is festival headquarters and the venue for many of these talks, films and events. Learn more about the 12th annual Yampa Valley Crane Festival.
