Community Sand Painting
The tradition continues.
Everyone is invited to work on Steamboat's new Community Sand Painting.
Throughout the Drepung Loseling monk's residency in Library Hall, the entire community is invited to participate in a hands-on Community Sand Painting. It will be located in Library Hall, opposite the monks’ mandala sand painting. Chakpurs, the monks' authentic sand painting tools, will be available for everyone to try this ancient art form. A chakpur is a metal funnel with a grated surface, along which the artist runs a metal rod. The vibration causes sand to flow like liquid onto the platform. A team of volunteer docents will be on hand to help the community learn and experience the process.
About the 2022 Community Sand Painting image
Local artist Jill Bergman has drawn the lines for a big, beautiful Steamboat Springs Mandala. The community is invited to help fill in her design with colorful sand throughout the monks' residency.

Volunteer to be a Community Sand Painting Docent!
Bud Werner Library is seeking volunteer artists to help lead artists of all ages at the community sand painting table from Aug. 10-14, 2022 during all hours. Learn some techniques from the monks, then share your knowledge with friends and neighbors as we manage the flow of artists of all ages working on the community sand painting. Interested volunteers in helping lead this five-day effort should contact Jennie Lay at jlay@steamboatlibrary.org.
